In 2014, a more stable (but less bleeding edge) variant of Hackage called Stackage was created. Criticism Ĭabal previously used a global package repository by default, version conflicts in dependencies could lead to Cabal hell, a state where certain packages couldn't get installed without re-installing already existing ones and therefore breaking the other packages. Throughout its development it has gained additional features such as sandboxes, which allow to escape the so-called Cabal hell (described below).Ĭabal packages provide a standard set of metadata and build process thus, it is possible to develop tools to upload Cabal packages to the CPAN-like community repository of software, Hackage, or even allow for automated downloading, compilation, and installation of desired packages from Hackage. The actual binary cabal and the library Cabal are developed in different packages. It was added to the Glasgow Haskell Compiler version 6.4 as default package manager, along GHC's internal manager ghc-pkg. When it comes to the sound design, I can’t help but feel a little let down with the ambient noise and music. Even in the areas that were reused it was quick and served its purpose well. Although an argument can be made as to how some of the environments feel like a retread of RE2 Remake, it did not feel that way for me. Each environment that players are brought into feels very atmospheric and finely detailed. HDR also feels much better implemented here compared to RE2 Remake as there were a few times where I really felt amazed by the lighting effects. I also really like the new character designs for Jill and Carlos (I’m sure he’s loving his new hair). That is a huge plus for me as you know sometimes an action scene can be oversold and it is hard to keep track of it but here it is clean and easy to follow without being boring. The performances and cutscene direction were quite fantastic for me as I did feel quite engaged with the action unfolding. The first thing that comes to mind is how the character models look amazing with more details in their expressions and even the fine details of their clothing and appearance. I thought that RE2 Remake was great, but I do feel like they have taken it up a notch here. If it really was omitted that’s a particularly strange thing to leave out. There is one thing that I did notice that was missing but it could just be me, Nemesis never once says the iconic line “STTAAARS!!!” during his pursuit of Jill. I can see how they could have made the game longer by providing better backstories and motivations to certain characters, but they didn’t and it’s better that it was a shorter game rather than one that unnecessarily extends its playtime. My total playtime was around 8 ½ hours but clear time was around just over 6 hours according to the in-game statistics. For me personally it didn’t feel too short and certainly did not feel like it had overstayed it’s welcome. I do have to say though that from a storytelling perspective the length of the game felt appropriate. I mean not that being more action-oriented is a bad thing but just from personal preference I would have preferred more focused breadcrumbs for the player to follow. Honestly speaking after playing RE2 Remake it does feel like the story in this game feels slightly bare as it does feel like the focus has shifted towards being more action-oriented as opposed to horror from the previous entry. Some of the other characters you meet include Brad, Mikhail, Nikolai, T (or Tyrell) with the most prominent one being Carlos who serves as the secondary character who you also get to play in some sections of the game. So begins her journey of trying to avoid Nemesis and survive long enough to escape the chaos together with characters she meets along the way. Resident Evil 3 starts out with Jill Valentine waking up with Racoon City in chaos and before she can even compose herself a large hulking menacing monster seems to be hell-bent on getting to her and this, of course, is Nemesis. In this review, I will go over both and before I get into it, I would just like to thank the lovely ladies and gents at CAPCOM for graciously providing us with the review code for this game. Not to mention many were not happy with the decision for Resident Evil Resistance being bundled together making it seem even more that RE3 Remake is half the game that RE2 Remake was. However, the early wave of reviews did highlight how the game was very short and that there were a few things that had been changed. Naturally, because of the high bar set by Resident Evil 2 Remake, fans were even more eagerly anticipating the release for Resident Evil 3 Remake hoping for an also authentic experience that fans remembered. The graphics were gorgeous, music good, gameplay tense and satisfying and replayability amazing with Leon and Claire both having route A & B options. CAPCOM really did manage to create one of if not the best Remake of a classic title at that moment. Unfortunately for me I only managed to try it out myself this January when PSN was having some sales and I too left the game quite impressed. It ended up being on more than just a few of Best of 2019 lists in the gaming community. When Resident Evil 2 Remake came out last year, I was skeptical then as it looked like it might be just a straight-up cash grab with how some remakes have been treated over the years. What precautions or change in design, if any, did you have to make to ensure these base building mechanics were not too overwhelming for casual players? Igor Elovikov: We just relied on our previous experience with casual downloadable games. Om Tandon: Was the decision to add a light base building loop made consciously or found to work through trial and error? The exact mechanics seen in Playrix titles (first set of images) can be seen very commonly in midcore and hard-core games with base builder loops as seen in mobile hardcore game (second two sets of images below.) In Tropix it was an island, while in Cradle of Rome it was a whole village.Īctually, those two games inspired us when we created Fishdom, and then Gardenscapes, so what you see in our mobile games now is something that was actually tried and tested a long time ago. Both games were released in 2007 (over 10 years ago!) and had a lot in common - players had to beat match-three levels to earn currency and resources, which were needed in order to construct something. Companies wanted to stand out which led them to try blending genres. Back then no one was even thinking about free-to-play mechanics and the market was saturated with lots of similar products. Igor Elovikov (Creative Director, Playrix): The roots of that decision date back to the times of casual downloadable games. Om Tandon: Why did you choose to move away from a Saga Map? What led the team to break away from this established cardinal rule of the Match 3 genre? As seen below, Players start on Node 1 and progress linearly to the next node within each world as they clear subsequent levels, offering no other significant interaction. No Saga maps! Which have remained unchanged and are hallmarks of player progression in King and Jam City games. Getting rid of the saga map in this genre and unlocking and populating the map with a decoration is very similar to a light version of base building tactics used by midcore and hardcore games. Playrix: Recipe of successĬombining the simple core loop of match-three titles with unlockable decorative elements in a niche environmental setting, powerful daily quest system and a well-crafted story loop is strongly reminiscent of features used in mid-core and hardcore games. Instead Playrix is walking a different path. Playrix is known for a string of successful top 10 grossing hits like Homescapes, Gardenscape and Fishdom in highly competitive match-three category, dominated by the likes of King, Jam City and Peak Games.īut unlike its peers, Playrix is not relying solely on eye candy graphics, super polished VFX and slick and dynamic gameplay which have become the pinnacle of this genre. In the second part of this article series, we put a spotlight on top 10 grossing casual games developer Playrix, which is trying hard to innovate and experiment with casual games, challenging the established norms of this genre, and finding profound success. The first part of this analytical series focused on Rovio Entertainment and how it successfully evolved and matured its multi-million dollar Angry Birds franchise. Why and how are casual games pivoting towards mid-core features? How are top tier Devs like Playrix driving this change in the casual gaming space? Here I have a close chat with Playrix, developer of top grossing games like Homescapes, Gardenscapes and Fishdom, to answer those questions. You can view part one, lessons from Angry Birds 2, here. On March 26, 2021, cast and crew members of the original Broadway production reunited for a livestream on the web series Stars in the House. According to The New York Times, "The chief competition for The Lion King was Ragtime, a lavish musical." The New York Times also noted that "The season was an artistic success as well, creating one of the most competitive Tony contests in years, with a battle in almost every category capped by the titanic struggle for the best musical award between Ragtime with 13 nominations and The Lion King with 11." The Broadway production was not financially successful, and some Broadway insiders consider its lavish production to have been the financial "undoing" of Livent. The musical won awards for Best Featured Actress (McDonald), Original Score, Book, and Orchestrations. Ben Brantley's review in The New York Times was headlined "A diorama with nostalgia rampant." It led the 1998 Tony Awards with thirteen Tony Award nominations, but Disney's The Lion King won as Best Musical. The production received mixed reviews, with critics noting that the dazzling physical production (with a $10 million budget, including fireworks and a working Model T automobile) overshadowed problems in the script. The production was conducted by David Loud. The original cast featured many of the actors from the original Toronto production, including Brian Stokes Mitchell as Coal House Walker, Marin Mazzie as Mother, Peter Friedman as Tateh and Audra McDonald as Sarah, all of whom were nominated for Tony Awards, as well as Steven Sutcliffe as Mother's Younger Brother, Judy Kaye as Emma Goldman, Mark Jacoby as Father and Lea Michele as Tateh's Daughter. Directed by Frank Galati and choreographed by Graciela Daniele, Ragtime closed on Januafter 834 performances and 27 previews. It was the first production in the newly opened Ford Center for the Performing Arts. The Broadway production began previews on Decemand officially opened on January 18, 1998. The US premiere was at the Shubert Theatre, Los Angeles in June 1997. In 1998, it was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. A concept album, Songs from Ragtime: The Musical, featuring the Toronto cast was released on February 11, 1996. It was produced by Canadian impresario Garth Drabinsky and his Livent Inc., the Toronto-production company he headed. The musical had its world premiere in Toronto, where it opened at the then-called Ford Centre for the Performing Arts (now the Meridian Arts Centre) on Decemand ran for 9 months. Production history Original Toronto and Broadway production Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry Kendall Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman. The show also incorporates historical figures such as Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Set in the early 20th century, Ragtime tells the story of three groups in the United States: African Americans, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician upper-class suburbanites, represented by Mother, the matriarch of a white upper-class family in New Rochelle, New York and Eastern European immigrants, represented by Tateh, a Jewish immigrant from Latvia. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Ragtime is a musical with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally. In order to keep track of the complexities of the world's time zones, most computer operating systems and software applications use one of the following two common data sources. You may not realize it, but this happens all over the world, dozens of times every year! Time Zones in Computing The reason more than one rule can exist is simple: Governments often change their minds! Whenever a government decides that their time zone should either move to a different base offset, enact or rescind daylight saving time, or change the transition dates of when daylight saving time begins or ends, the existing rule becomes invalid, and a new rule goes into effect. Time Zones of the Continental United States Time zones can change! Likewise, UTC-4 is associated with "Eastern Daylight Time" and abbreviated "EDT". For example, in the US Eastern Time zone, UTC-5 is associated with "Eastern Standard Time" and abbreviated "EST". The transition dates and times that daylight saving time starts and endsĮach offset within the rule will usually have an associate name and abbreviation. This is usually (but not always) one hour greater than the standard offset. One or more rules which consist of: The effective date and time for the rule A standard offset from UTC, such as UTC-5 If the time zone uses daylight saving time: The daylight offset, such as UTC-4.A legal name (or a common name), such as "Eastern Time".A geographic boundary that can usually be plotted on a map.Time Zone CharacteristicsĪ time zone consists of all of the following: Therefore, a time zone cannot be represented by just a single number. In fact, many time zones have two offsets - one that is followed during "standard time", and one that is followed during "daylight time" (which is sometimes called "summer time"). An offset is simply one characteristic of a time zone. Time Zone != OffsetĪ time zone is not just an offset from UTC or GMT. However, there are also time zones that are in place by convention, without any governing laws. Usually these rules are set by the laws of that region. Within the boundaries of a time zone, all local clocks should follow the same set of timekeeping rules. When talking about time zones, it's important to recognize that you are talking about a real place on the surface of the Earth. If you enjoy this topic, please consider watching the video course! A time zone is a geographic region This material is also covered in my Pluralsight course, Date and Time Fundamentals. |
